Friday Flashback!
Volume 3: Shorts + Blouse

Happy day, reader dear!
Welcome back to Friday Flashback, the summer series where I take an outfit from this week last year, review it, and update it. After last week’s installment (of one of my favorite looks of 2018) it’s a little embarrassing to take on this week’s picture. But it does turn out to be a great example of how much one’s taste can change over a year.
Last year, I found myself wearing my navy shorts with a navy jacket to a few casual business events . This year, the feeling of a shorts-suit isn’t making me happy. At. All. Shorts and a blazer for casual wear, sure! The more “polished” version? No thank you.
This week last year…

What’s still in my wardrobe?
Not the shorts! I’ve outgrown them. Physically, I mean. Sigh. Also, my capsule wardrobes for Spring and Summer 2019 have a much lighter color palette, and this navy feels just too darned dark. The blouse is in my storage box, the aquas and mints may make an appearance in the winter, or for the warm seasons next year, but will stay stored for now. I guess I will need to work the Shorts + Blouse with the shoes and earrings above, since those are both still in heavy rotation!
How would I style it today?
I wear shorts and a blouse regularly, but have defaulted to wearing shorts only for work at home/casual days. Here are a few shorts looks from this spring and summer, although none with pumps!
Let’s see… If I were to combine those teardrop hoops, and blue/grey pumps with shorts and a blouse, today I imagine it coming out something like this look below. Definitely softer, lighter, and less structured:

No doubt about it, shorts can be tricky. The proportions can leave almost anyone looking short and squat. If you avoid shorts because they never “look right,” check out this post with some tips for getting the most flattery. How about you? Do you wear shorts? Or do your legs never see the light of day? Are shorts only for exercise and gardening? What are your favorite styles? Do let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
Stylishly yours,

I have a love-hate relationship with shorts. Had heard that longer lengths are not necessarily more flattering for women of a certain age (grandmas like me). My sister, who is 6′ tall, always wears very long shorts which cut her legs exactly in half. A little shorter length might be a bit more flattering. I have found 7″ or 8″ shorts to work well for me. Feel a little naked in 5″.

Thank you for visiting, Leslie! The best length of shorts has nothing to do with age and everything to do with proportion. It’s important to keep them short if you are on the shorter side, your 6′ sister has lots more options… But I’m sure she struggles to find trousers long enough! There’s always a price to pay! When wearing longer shorts, it’s important to keep them slim. Wide will always create more width and be less flattering.
